Different categories

A research material is used in a defined laboratory or investigative context. A medicine is a product that has gone through the applicable regulatory pathway for a specified indication, quality standard and intended population.

Clinical and laboratory research

Laboratory work may be in vitro or otherwise non-clinical. Clinical research involves human participants and operates under its own ethical, regulatory and monitoring requirements. Evidence from one setting cannot automatically be treated as evidence from another.

Regulatory status

Marketing authorisation is a regulatory decision tied to a product, quality system, indications and jurisdiction. The phrase research use only does not by itself determine legal classification. Readers should independently verify the regulations and requirements that apply to their location and activity; this is not legal advice.

Research information should remain objective and should not be interpreted as a recommendation for human use.
