How to Read a Certificate of Analysis (CoA)

A practical guide to batch-specific certificates, test methods, acceptance criteria and documentation questions.

What is a CoA?

A Certificate of Analysis records results for a specified material or batch. It should be read as documentation of the reported tests, not as a general guarantee about every use.

What to check

Start with product identification, batch number, testing date, laboratory identity and the document version. Then review appearance, reported purity, HPLC method, mass-spectrometry result, storage information and acceptance criteria.

Why batch specificity matters

A document should correspond to the exact batch being reviewed. A generic template or unrelated batch does not establish the same result. Researchers may ask which method was used, whether the result is representative, how deviations are handled, and who authorised the report.

Analytical documentation supports informed research decisions; it does not prove suitability for human consumption.
